Choosing a good name for your pet

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
We take so much time, nine months to be exact, to choose a name for a child. Why are we so quick to stick our beloved pets, our extended family members, with such simple names as Spot or Buddy? We should take more time and put more thought into what we name our dogs. They have feelings too. You wouldn’t officially name your child something crazy like Boo-Boo, Fifi, Dummy or Doofus.

Some of these would be okay for a Nickname but you wouldn’t want it on your child’s birth certificate. Why do this to your pet? Names should be unique and fun but not detrimental to the dog’s mental well-being. Dogs can have one name or many names. They can have a first, middle and last name.

Here area few Steps You can take when deciding what name to give your special friend. 1. Watch your pet as it enters your household and interacts with family members 2. Judge your pet’s attitude and personality 3. Decide if you want a unique name or something traditional and simple4. Look at a book of baby namesSome people name their dogs as if they are naming a child, such as Abigail Marie or Joseph Bradley.

Then others choose unique names like Mister People, Lubbable Double Trouble, Garbanzo the Jumping Bean or Lil Bit Daiquiri Mak N Me Dizy. Some use names that can make a phrase like Hot as Black Pepper, I Wanta be a Mouse, Ima Playa Honest or U Megan Me Blush. Others use rhyming names like Toe Joe, Fidget Midget Gidget, Lucky Ducky Bucky or Scary Hairy Mary.

And these are only a few of the great names that we see everyday. They are all good examples of using your imagination and really thinking about what to name your dog. You don’t want to be one of those pet owners who, when asked their pet’s name, says “uh…dog?!” or “Hey you?!”Your dog and its feelings are important too, so name it well.
